‎Rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore has defended calls for a N500,000 minimum wage in Nigeria while criticising what he described as excessive spending by political office holders.

‎The remarks were contained in a statement posted on Sowore’s official page.

‎According to the statement, Sowore questioned arguments that Nigeria lacks the financial capacity to implement a higher minimum wage for workers.

‎He also referenced allegations circulating online involving Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa and claims relating to campaign funds.

‎“If there is money for politicians, there must be money for workers.

‎“₦500,000 minimum wage is not the problem. The problem is a political class that treats public funds as private property while millions of Nigerians suffer,” the statement read.

‎Sowore further argued that the country’s economic challenges are connected to corruption and misplaced priorities rather than a lack of financial resources.
